Christmas Markets in L'Aquila 2026: a City's Rebirth in Festive Spirit
Piazza Duomo, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, ice skating rink, Ferris wheel, Harry Potter at Villa Comunale: from December 8 to January 6

The Christmas markets of L'Aquila 2026 are far more than an event: they are the symbol of the city's rebirth after the devastating earthquake of April 6, 2009. From 2009 onward, every year the Abruzzo capital comes alive in winter among the wooden chalets of Piazza Duomo, Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and Corso Federico II, with an outdoor ice skating rink, a Ferris wheel, the Santa Claus Village at Palazzo Rosati, and the beloved Harry Potter–themed market at Villa Comunale that enchants visitors of all ages. The typical period runs from December 8 to January 6, closed out by the historic Epiphany Fair in Piazza del Palazzo. Local specialties: DOP saffron, nougat, and Castelli ceramics. A complete guide to visiting L'Aquila's Christmas markets.

L'Aquila: context and symbolism of the markets
L'Aquila, the capital of Abruzzo, is a city with a rich ancient history, founded in 1254 at the behest of Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen. Its historic center, destroyed by the magnitude 6.3 earthquake of April 6, 2009 (309 victims, tens of thousands displaced), has been gradually rebuilt and today shines with renewed beauty.
L'Aquila's Christmas markets have become the symbol of "lived reconstruction": every year the city proves it has come back to life, and the atmosphere carries an emotional power that few Italian Christmas markets can match. Walking among the wooden chalets with a view of the Duomo and the Cathedral of Santi Massimo e Giorgio is an experience that weaves celebration and memory together.
