Ovindoli - Monte Magnola: Skiing 1h30 from Rome in the Sirente-Velino Park
30 km of slopes, 11 lifts, Magnola Snowpark, night skiing: the resort closest to Rome on the Altopiano delle Rocche

Ovindoli - Monte Magnola is one of the most beloved ski resorts in Abruzzo and one of the closest to Rome (1h30 via the A24/A25). Nestled on the Altopiano delle Rocche at 1,400 m above sea level, in the heart of the Parco Naturale Regionale Sirente-Velino in the province of L'Aquila, it offers ~30 km of slopes across 21 runs for all ability levels, served by 11 ski lifts. Elevations range from 1,400 m (base station) up to 2,220 m at the summit of Monte Magnola, where you'll be rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view over the Velino, Sirente, and Gran Sasso massifs. Night skiing on dedicated evenings, the Magnola Snowpark at 2,000 m for snowboarders and freestylers, and affordable daily lift tickets (~€38–40). Ovindoli is also part of the "Tre Nevi" / Skipass dei Parchi consortium alongside Campo Imperatore and Campo Felice. And beyond the slopes, Ovindoli itself is a medieval borgo at 1,375 m, with a well-preserved historic center and a wide range of accommodation.
Where Ovindoli Is
Ovindoli is a municipality of around 1,200 inhabitants in the province of L'Aquila, perched on the Altopiano delle Rocche at 1,375 meters, right in the heart of the Parco Naturale Regionale Sirente-Velino. The medieval borgo clusters around the Chiesa di San Sebastiano and retains the characteristic pastoral character of high-altitude Abruzzo. Distances: 35 km from L'Aquila (40 min), 130 km from Rome (1h30 via the A24/A25), 130 km from Pescara (1h45), 60 km from Avezzano (50 min). Together with Rocca di Mezzo and Rocca di Cambio, it forms the tourist hub of the Altopiano delle Rocche.
The Altopiano delle Rocche and the Sirente-Velino Park
The Altopiano delle Rocche is a vast tectonic basin sitting at 1,300–1,400 m, cradled between the Massiccio del Velino (2,487 m) to the southeast and Monte Sirente (2,349 m) to the north. It is one of Italy's most significant high plateaus, both in terms of scale and biodiversity.
The Parco Naturale Regionale Sirente-Velino, established in 1989, covers approximately 54,000 hectares and is home to Apennine wolves, chamois, golden eagles, and bears (rare). One of Italy's least-known wild areas. A dedicated article is coming soon.
Three main municipalities sit on the plateau, each with its own ski resort:
Ovindoli (1,375 m): home to Monte Magnola
Rocca di Mezzo (1,329 m): close to Campo Felice
Rocca di Cambio (1,434 m): the highest municipality in the Apennines
